Collierville Nursing Home Plagued by Citations; Finds New Ownership

Over the years, Jehl Law Group has become familiar with Poplar Oaks Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center by pursuing cases against the facility for claims of abuse and neglect. Unfortunately, the problems are far from isolated and undoubtedly numerous.

In 2017 alone, the nursing home, which has a one-star rating and is ranked “Much Below Average” on Nursing Home Compare, was cited 17 times by health inspectors, which is nearly three times the state average of five complaints per year.

Moreover, the home was forced to pay a fine of $11,000 in 2017 after regulators deemed the home did not correctly handle abuse allegations relating to a resident’s fractured ankle.

A Nursing Home Plagued By Citations

According to WREG Channel 3 Memphis, accusations in a string of police reports included:

  • An employee pushing on a resident’s fractured ribs and laughing.
  • A staff member removing a patient’s call button from the room, so the resident could not call for help.
  • Staff not changing a resident’s dirty undergarments and administering incorrect medication, which made the resident sick.
  • Employees were accused of yelling and cursing at residents.

Most recently, the police were contacted after a resident at the facility was transported to the hospital for what appeared to be a black eye that became infected and swollen shut. She was also found to have bedsores.

New Name, New Ownership

Poplar Oaks, formerly known as Dove, and now known as Collierville Nursing and Rehabilitation, has not only undergone a name change, but it is also bringing on new ownership.

The Kentucky company, ClearView Health Management, is stepping in after Orianna Health Systems, the home’s previous parent company, filed for bankruptcy and sold the nursing home in October.

With the new management, ClearView plans on opening an office in Memphis and also hiring a suitable, permanent administrator. New staff has already been brought on board.

Additional staff, new vents, breathing equipment, and staff training programs have all been implemented by ClearView in an attempt to address previous wrongs and create a more appropriate living environment.

Is This Common?

While most people hope this is anything but common, the opposite is often true. Just in 2017, Ashton Place Rehabilitation and Care Center, another facility Jehl Law Group has had cases against, was under investigation after a resident at the facility was found lying in a pile of his excretion while also dealing with an open leg wound that became a home for maggots. He was taken to a hospital and later passed away.

Unfortunately, elder abuse and neglect takes places in nearly every city and state of the country. Not only are our cases limited to Memphis, but we also have open cases all over Tennessee, as well as in surrounding states, such as Arkansas and Kentucky.

Too often, we see families and loved ones suffer from untreated bedsores, malnutrition, dehydration, sepsis, sexual abuse, theft, negligence, medication errors, and the list goes on.

Such treatment is not okay, and our law firm is dedicated to making a difference.
